Umbraco upgrades
taking care of your content and functionality

Running an older version of Umbraco? I help upgrade and migrate websites to newer Umbraco versions, making sure your content, integrations and key features are carried over. From the initial review through testing and launch.

Umbraco Versions

When should you upgrade?

Umbraco 7–12 and 14–16: Support has ended

These Umbraco versions no longer receive security updates. This increases the risk of vulnerabilities and makes maintenance more difficult. An upgrade should be planned as soon as possible.

Umbraco 13: End of Life in December 2026

Umbraco 13 reaches End of Life on December 14, 2026. After that, security updates will stop. If you're running version 13, now is the time to plan an upgrade to Umbraco 17 LTS.

Umbraco 17 and 18: Stay Up to Date

Even newer Umbraco versions need regular updates and security patches. Keeping your site up to date also makes future upgrades easier to manage.

LTS or STS: Which Should You Choose?

LTS versions receive three years of support, while STS versions receive one year. LTS is therefore often the better choice for businesses that prefer longer intervals between major upgrades.

Why upgrade now?

An Umbraco upgrade isn't just about security. A newer version also provides a better foundation for faster websites, easier content editing and future development.

Security & Stability

A supported Umbraco version receives ongoing security patches and bug fixes. I can also take care of installing updates, so you don't have to keep track of them yourself.

Performance & Modern .NET

Newer Umbraco versions run on modern .NET, providing better opportunities to optimize speed, caching and resource usage.

Better Editing & Development

A modern Umbraco backoffice makes content editing easier, while an up-to-date platform simplifies the development of new features and integrations.

Upgrade or migration?

An Umbraco upgrade means updating your existing website to a newer version. Content, document types and functionality are preserved wherever possible, while code and packages are adapted as needed. Smaller version upgrades are often relatively straightforward.

For larger version jumps, particularly from Umbraco 7 or 8 to modern .NET-based versions, the differences can be significant enough to make a migration the better approach. This involves setting up a new solution and transferring content and relevant functionality, while also providing an opportunity to clean up outdated code and structure.

In practice, the line between upgrading and migrating isn't always clear. I review your existing Umbraco website, including custom features, integrations and packages, and recommend the approach that makes the most sense technically and financially.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Umbraco upgrade cost?

It depends on your current Umbraco version, the size of the website, and any custom features, integrations or packages. I start by reviewing the existing solution and provide an estimate, so you know the expected scope and cost before work begins.

How long does an Umbraco upgrade take?

A minor version upgrade may take a few days, while larger migrations can take several weeks. The timeline depends mainly on how much custom code and how many integrations need updating. Your existing website can normally remain online while the upgrade is carried out and tested.

Will we lose our Google rankings during an upgrade?

An Umbraco upgrade doesn't have to negatively affect your SEO. I preserve existing URLs or set up proper 301 redirects where needed. Metadata and other SEO settings are also reviewed. This reduces the risk of losing rankings, although unchanged search results cannot be guaranteed.

Can we upgrade from Umbraco 7 or 8 to the latest version?

Yes, but this typically requires a larger migration rather than a straightforward upgrade. Content and document types need to be transferred, while custom code, integrations and older packages must be reviewed. Some functionality may need to be rewritten or replaced. I'll assess the best approach based on your existing solution.

Will we lose content or functionality during the upgrade?

The goal is to preserve both content and functionality. I review the existing solution beforehand to identify what can be transferred directly and what may need adapting. The work is normally carried out in a separate environment, allowing your current website to remain online until the upgraded solution has been tested and is ready.

Do you also upgrade Umbraco Cloud websites?

Yes. I work with upgrades and further development of Umbraco websites hosted on both Umbraco Cloud and other platforms, such as Microsoft Azure. The approach depends on your existing solution and hosting environment.

Do you help web agencies with Umbraco upgrades?

Yes. I work as a subcontractor for web agencies that need additional capacity or expertise with older Umbraco versions. I can handle the upgrade or work alongside your team while you maintain the client relationship.

Does your Umbraco website need upgrading?

Send me the address of your site and you'll get a first assessment of what an upgrade requires.
